Hello, my name is Colin and yes, that’s really me in the picture 🙂
Why did I start this site?
After an unfortunate burglary when I lost all of my power tools I had to go through the process of buying a decent set of new power tools for myself and began to realise what a long chore this could be.
What I initially thought would be a quick process in fact took me quite a lot of research and reading up on forums etc to enable me to make the most informed decision on the best tool available for any particular task.
Surely I just look for the best seller, right?
Well, what might be an ideal choice for one user may very well not be for someone else?
It all depends upon use and requirements.
Are you a heavy duty power user or just after something lightweight for occasional use?
Do you have a tight budget to work with?
Perhaps you need an adaptable tool that can cover lots of different uses all with one basic tool?
It’s all ‘horses for courses’ and hopefully we can help you to make an informed decision and one that you will ultimately be very happy with 🙂
So, who am I and why should you listen to me?
I’m a design engineer by trade and have years of experience in product design so I like to think that I have a pretty good handle on exactly what does make a good design 🙂
I started off with a 5 year apprenticeship in a machine tool shop working with lathes, milling machines, shapers welding etc followed by a long electrical training period and associated studies giving me an excellent grounding in what goes into the design and manufacture of a product.
I have now spent many years in industry and know all about the design process, product reliability and durability proving and the testing that goes into a product design to ensure that it is fit for purpose.
Now I can tell you that all manufacturers, doesn’t matter who they are, have good and not so good products.
Sure, you may have a particular brand in mind that you always go to but you can bet your bottom dollar that even the very best have some products that aren’t quite as good as they could be and – for that particular power tool type – you may well find that you’d be better off choosing a product from another manufacturer.
Sure, I love Dewalt, Makita and Hitachi, but I don’t let the name limit me when I go to buy another tool for my workshop, I might miss out on something really great!
